Staff FAQs
How do I apply to be a counselor, and what is the process?
The process follows five steps: Matchmaking (checking fit/availability), Application (online form + 3 references), Interview, The Offer, and Preparation. Applications typically open for new staff around mid-January.
What is the minimum age to work at TIC?
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to be a full-time, seasonal counselor at TIC. For our Flex Counselor position (formerly the Volunteer Staff Assistant), applicants must be 16 years old.
What is the time commitment for the summer?
Staff are generally required to commit to at least six weeks of camp, though preference is given to those who can work the entire summer duration.
Is staff training mandatory?
Yes. Staff must complete over 40 hours of training, which includes online modules before camp, 28 hours of on-site training, and weekly in-service workshops throughout the summer.
Does TIC provide housing for counselors?
No. TIC runs day camps in the DC, VA, and MD metro areas, and has no resident facilities. Counselors are responsible for their own housing and transportation.
What is the counselor-to-camper ratio?
TIC maintains a very high ratio to ensure individualized instruction: 1:4 in Technology and 1:6 in Athletics.
How long is each session?
Sessions are two weeks each, and the summer consists of four sessions.
Do I need to be an expert in both technology and athletics?
Not necessarily. While counselors should have a "mind and body balance" mindset, they are usually hired for their expertise in a specific area, such as a Technology Counselor (e.g., Roblox, Minecraft, Filmmaking) or an Athletics Counselor.
If I am a technology counselor, do I teach a specific curriculum?
TIC focuses on individualized instruction. You aren't just following a script; you'll tailor your teaching to each camper’s skill level and interests, helping them achieve their specific creative goals.
What if I have an academic conflict for part of the summer?
While full-summer commitment is preferred, TIC does state that some exceptions can be made for academic reasons. You should discuss your specific availability during the "Matchmaking" step of the application.
What is the difference between working with the “juniors” and the “seniors”?
Juniors are rising 2nd–5th graders, while Seniors are 6th–10th graders. Grouping for technology is based on the specific tech option and age, whereas athletic grouping is strictly by age and size to ensure fair and safe play.
What is the new “Flex Counselor” position at TIC?
We have updated our VSA (Volunteer Staff Assistant) program to the new Flex Counselor position. This is now a full-time, seasonal staff position. Applicants are rising 11th-12th graders, as well as be at least 16 years old. More information can be found here.
What is the staff compensation and payroll?
Assistant Flex Counselors receive a flat-rate lump sum of $600 per session. Counselors are paid an hourly rate based on their specific state’s regulations. All hours are tracked through Rippling, with payments issued on a bi-weekly schedule.
Do I apply for the “Counselor” position or the “Flex Counselor” position?
Applicants over the age of 18 or who have previously worked as a Volunteer Staff Assistant should apply for the regular Counselor position. Applicants who are rising 11th-12th grade and at least 16 years old, should apply for the Flex Counselor position.
Does TIC hire international staff?
International staff are only hired through authorized agencies like Camp America, which handle visas and insurance. (Note: It is worth checking if the specific international program status has changed recently, as it was previously suspended).
Is lunch provided to staff during the summer?
We recommend all staff bring a lunch from home. Staff can order lunch through the services that provides campers their lunch, and a link will be sent before the summer starts. Lastly, staff can order lunch through DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc., but must arrive before lunch starts.
